Project Highlight | Altona Memorial Park Entry Mounds Inventory
Integrated Access, Landscape and Burial Yield Strategy at the Southern Gateway
The Entry Mounds Inventory Design at Altona Memorial Park (AMP) introduces a high-capacity, forward-thinking burial zone at the southern precinct of the cemetery. This project blends foundational infrastructure for lawn and monumental graves with soft landform design, passive recreation, and accessible public space, establishing a visually coherent and operationally resilient cemetery entry.
The masterplan includes integrated stormwater management, a structured mound-based layout, civic-scale public amenity zones, and generous path networks. Designed to serve growing community needs while maintaining spatial dignity, the precinct creates a green and orderly gateway into one of Melbourne’s largest memorial parks.
Services Delivered:
- Burial inventory planning for both lawn and monumental grave typologies.
- Mounded landform design supporting seasonal drainage, soil stability, and visual rhythm.
- Foundations and concrete beam networks installed for long-term grave alignment.
- DDA-compliant access routes including ramps, handrails, and tactile surfacing.
- Passive recreation amenities (picnic shelters, water stations, seating nodes).
- Perimeter landscape buffers and tree planting for spatial definition and cooling.
- WSUD-informed irrigation corridors and soft-infrastructure berms.
- Road and path hierarchy planning to support circulation and burial visitation.
Project Overview
This project repositions Altona Memorial Park’s entry zone as a model of integrated memorial infrastructure. Rather than treating the gateway as transitional, the design activates it with considered landform, clear sightlines, and burial typologies that are both scalable and legible.
The engineered concrete beam layout supports long-term asset management, while native and exotic tree planting along pathways enhances wayfinding and shade. A civic pavilion and public water amenities establish a respectful visitor experience that aligns with GMCT’s vision of functional yet emotionally resonant landscapes.
The gently sloping berms frame grave rows, manage water flow, and echo AMP’s historic landform language—providing both practical infrastructure and symbolic grounding. The result is a cohesive, dignified extension of Altona’s memorial legacy, supporting both cultural sensitivity and civic accessibility.
