Natural Burial and Cremated Remains Sections in Harkness Cemetery (VIC)

Project Highlight: Meso Space’s new design in Harkness Cemetery, Victoria, is a testament to innovative landscape design merging sustainability, conservation, and community engagement. The centrepiece of the project is the expansive rain garden, boasting an impressive water capacity rating exceeding 20,000 litres. This feature not only serves as a practical solution for stormwater management but also enhances the local ecosystem by providing vital habitat for various species.

Complementing the rain garden are carefully selected native trees, including iconic river red gum trees. These indigenous plantings not only contribute to the preservation of the region’s natural heritage but also foster biodiversity within the cemetery grounds.

What sets this project apart is its seamless integration with the existing Gilgai environment in Harkness. By incorporating elements of the natural landscape, such as depressions formed by alternating layers of soil and rock, the design preserves the area’s ecological integrity while creating a tranquil and contemplative setting for visitors.

Moreover, the project is guided by the principle of place-making, transforming the cemetery into a multifunctional space that invites people to not only pay their respects but also to enjoy it as a park. This approach fosters a sense of belonging and community engagement, encouraging individuals to interact with the space in meaningful ways beyond traditional cemetery visits.

Meso Space’s design for Harkness Cemetery is a harmonious blend of environmental stewardship, cultural preservation, and social inclusivity, exemplifying the potential for landscapes to serve as both functional infrastructure and vibrant public spaces.
