Proposed Pedestrian Bridge Above Moonee Valley Pond (VIC)
Project Highlight: Designed by MesoSpace, the proposed pedestrian bridge above Moonee Valley Pond represents a significant step towards enhancing accessibility and fostering a sense of place and safety within the community. Here’s how the project aims to achieve these goals:
- Accessibility: The bridge is meticulously designed to adhere to Australian Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) accessibility standards, ensuring that it is inclusive and welcoming to all individuals, regardless of their mobility. With structural elements engineered to accommodate accessibility requirements, such as step ramps and handrails, the bridge prioritizes ease of use for pedestrians of all abilities.
- Place-Making and Public Safety: As a key principle of the project, the bridge contributes to the creation of a vibrant public space by connecting different areas and encouraging pedestrian activity. By providing a safe and accessible pathway over Moonee Valley Pond, the bridge enhances connectivity within the community while promoting recreational opportunities and social interaction.
- Innovative Lighting Design: The lighting elements of the bridge are thoughtfully crafted to not only illuminate the pathway for safe passage but also to create an engaging visual experience reminiscent of an enlightened stage. Drawing inspiration from a catwalk at a fashion event, the lighting design adds a touch of elegance and spectacle to the pedestrian experience, enhancing the ambience of the bridge and its surroundings.
- Structural Integrity: Committed to ensuring structural integrity and longevity, the bridge is constructed under Australian engineering standards. Utilizing two deep pile foundations at the beginning and end of the bridge, the above-ground steel structure is anchored securely, providing stability and durability for years to come.
- Materials Selection: In line with Australian standards for quality and sustainability, the bridge features modwood decking and galvanized handrails. These materials not only meet rigorous safety and durability requirements but also blend harmoniously with the natural environment, enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the bridge and complementing its surroundings.
