Project Highlight | Ecological Cemetery and Resilient Landscape Architecture
Snow Gum B is a future-focused cemetery expansion located at Northern Memorial Park in Glenroy, Victoria. Designed as a self-sustaining landscape to accommodate 1,400 garden headstone graves, this project redefines conventional cemetery planning through water-sensitive urban design (WSUD), native ecology, and a climate-responsive landform strategy. Rooted in the philosophy of viewing cemeteries as living natural environments, the design moves beyond static spaces of memory to create dynamic landscapes that nurture both ecological health and human connection.
Central to the project is a north–south natural swale system that interconnects Tree Protection Zones (TPZs) for several significant historical river red gum trees on site. This method of linking TPZs through a continuous swale not only safeguards these heritage trees but also enhances habitat connectivity, allowing the site to function as an integrated ecological corridor. The swale captures stormwater runoff from the eastern and western sections of the site, directing it into interconnected low points across the landscape. These natural retention areas hold up to 150m³ of water per event, eliminating the need for mechanical irrigation for most of the year, and enabling a self-watering system that supports the landscape throughout much of the year.
The project prioritises minimal intervention. Rather than relying on concrete channels or underground piping, the approach leverages WSUD principles through soft earthworks, native planting, and gently graded slopes (maximum 1:6) that support natural hydrology while ensuring safe and accessible pedestrian movement. The design thoughtfully integrates TPZs, shallow ponds, and a central deck space for gathering and quiet reflection, fostering both ecological connection and social use.
Once established, the vegetation requires minimal maintenance, contributing to a cooler microclimate, enhanced biodiversity, and long-term cost efficiency. This aligns with GMCT’s commitment to sustainability and asset performance, while offering a serene, reflective burial environment deeply connected to its natural context. Snow Gum B exemplifies how cemetery design can evolve—transforming into legacy landscapes that honour memory while fostering urban resilience and ecological vitality.
